WE THE PEOPLE, must in our own small ways expose the rot in the system in our dear country, Nigeria. The leaders (rulers) and the led have allowed money to tempt them into sacrificing their integrity, as clearly stated in Proverbs 19:1 “Better is the poor who walks in his integrity. Than one who is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.”

We have this false feeling that money can provide us safety, but the contrary is the case as seen in Proverbs 18:11 “The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale.”

We must doubly try in keeping money from controlling us, otherwise, we would be getting away from our God, as clearly stated in Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

No matter the amount of wealth we try to acquire, we must bear it in mind that, it cannot bring true happiness as the book of life points out in 1 Timothy 6:6-10 “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

We all agree that without money, the very basic needs of man cannot be met, but we must distinguish between the necessity of money and the love of money. The warning to the rich oppressors can be found in James 5:1-6 “Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.”
Let us heed good counsel, as God speaketh through man.
